Concerns have been raised over the care provided to ex-Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell before his death.

  WHAT HAPPENED?

  Campbell passed away at the age of 54 on June 15 after a month-long stay in the Manchester hospital. Per the BBC, coroner Zak Golombek declared a Level 5 patient safety incident in relation to his care. That is the most serious category and he also said that Campbell's cause of death was multi-organ failure due to a heart infection.

  THE BIGGER PICTURE

  Golombek said that the Level 5 incident was called due to a delay in certain aspects of Campbell's care and diagnosis, as well as issues over palliative care and the speed of decision-making.

• WHAT THE CORONER SAID

  The coroner said: "He had been reported to have been fit and well until around January 2024, when he had a number of admissions to hospital before this final admission."

  He added: "I have also received notification from the trust that a medical cause of death can be offered and, therefore, I will consider evidence from the clinicians involved in Mr Campbell's care as to the cause of his death.

  "The provisional cause of death, as it stands, refers to Mr Campbell dying from multi-organ failure as a result of infective endocarditis."

  WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

  The inquest has been adjourned to a later date. Campbell carved out a superb career for the likes of Arsenal, Everton, and West Bromwich Albion, and his son, Tyrese, who plays for Stoke City, has claimed that his father's death has led to "indescribable pain".
